The morning of the election of new Minister General of the Order began with a celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit, presided by the delegate of Pope Francis, Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. During the election process that followed, Brother Massimo Fusarelli, Provincial Minister of Rome, was elected as 121st Successor of St Francis.
In the afternoon, consultations were held in Conference groups for the Elections of the Vicar General and General Definitors, and a consultative ballot was conducted for election of the Vicar General, which will be held on Wednesday 14 July. Conferences were asked to submit their shortlist of candidates for the new General Definitory to the General Secretary of the Chapter.
The new Minister General expressed his gratitude for the family spirit at the General Chapter, the shared vocation of the brothers of the Order, and of service of Brother Michael Perry and the previous leadership. He spoke of his vision of the new Definitorium as a team that will work together, and as a think tank to read the present and to plan for the future with faith and determination. “I would like to listen to the brothers in all their diversity… (and in) their hardships and anxieties,” he added, and asked for the prayers and help of the brothers in the way ahead.
During the final session of the afternoon, the Assembly worked together on the first part of the proposals from the groups and Commissions, on the topics of Identity and Formation. This presentation was introduced by the head of the Chapter Commission, Brother Lawrence Hayes, and the discussion was facilitated by Chapter Moderator, Brother Cesare Vaiani. The discussion on identity covered areas of fraternal life, expressions of minority, interculturality, relevance, and unity. Contributions to the discussion on formation were on the importance of crisis accompaniment and on our common, human, social, missionary, pastoral, leadership, and other areas of ongoing formation. Special emphasis was given to fraternal equality, especially between lay and cleric brothers.
After Vespers, Capitulars enjoyed a Festive Dinner on the Piazza, in honor of the new Minister General.
